School Meals
Please see our current school dinner menu below.
We offer a variety of menu choices
Currently, we offer:
- Our usual menu – which includes all options for dietary intolerances and vegetarians
- A menu specific for Gluten Free diets (this is for parents who have let us know that their child is gluten intolerant)
School Lunches
Lunches are cooked on the school premises; the meals are of a high nutritional standard and are excellent value for money. The choice includes a meat or fish dish, a vegetarian option, jacket potatoes (with a choice of fillings), sandwiches (on selected days), together with a daily salad bar. There is a daily dessert as well as yoghurts and a selection of fresh fruits. Children are encouraged to make healthy choices. Special diets on medical or religious grounds can be catered for.
The cost of a school lunch is currently £2.45. Payments should be made in advance using your ParentPay account for a week, month, half term or term.
Alternatively, children may bring a packed lunch. The packed meal should be stored in a suitable container. Drinks should include a plastic cup or drinking straw. Glass bottles and cans are not allowed. Parents are asked not to send in any foods containing nuts as we have a number of children in school with severe nut allergies.
Children are cared for and supervised by experienced staff during the lunchtime period. They are encouraged to eat their meals and are expected to maintain the high standard of behaviour which runs through the school day. Lunchtime staff organise and run a variety of lunchtime outdoor activities.
If you wish your child to go home at lunchtime they may do so as long as we have written permission to allow them out of school.
Parents who feel they may be eligible for free school meals are actively encouraged to contact the school office for information. All enquiries are dealt with confidentially.
Healthy Snacks
We encourage children to have regular drinks of water and to bring fresh or dried fruit, vegetables such as carrots or cheese sticks to eat at morning break times. Parents are asked not to send in any foods containing nuts as we have a number of children in school with severe nut allergies. We do not allow sweets, crisps, biscuits and fruit filled or cereal bars (as these often contain seeds and nut allergens).
Children may bring in their own unflavoured drinking water, providing it is stored in a suitable container and can re-fill their containers at the start of break times if they wish to do so. Drinking bottles are available from the school office (£1.50).
Food Allergens
CJS is a NUT AWARE SCHOOL
The new Food Information Regulations require schools to inform staff and parents about the allergenic ingredients in any food or drink that is provided by the school. The 14 Allergens in the regulations are as follows: celery, gluten, crustaceans, eggs, fish, lupin, milk, molluscs, mustard, nuts, peanuts, sesame seeds, soya and sulphur dioxide.
The school dinner menus on the Junior School and the Infant School websites contain all the relevant information about the 14 allergens.
Chellaston Junior School is responsible for providing the school meals at both the Junior and the Infant School. We aim to serve high quality, healthy meals which meet the needs of all pupils. If any parents have any concerns about any allergies your child may have with regard to food, then please contact the main office at the Junior School to discuss this further with the catering team.
The kitchens at both schools meet all the standards regarding food safety (both schools have been awarded 5 stars from Environmental Health this year). However, as all food is prepared in the same kitchen, there is a very slight chance that a trace of certain allergens may be present, such as gluten, eggs or milk.
Future menus will continue to show all allergen information, but we ask that parents with any concerns contact the school.
